This Week's News From The Farms

We hope everyone had a happy Easter. Our holiday weekend started off with a beautiful blanket of 4-5 inches of snow. Although it was a heavy, wet snow that broke a few tree branches, it did not really hurt many of the crops underway. Snow is actually a good insulator for a lot of plants, protecting them from the harsh winds and frigid temperatures. In fact, a late spring snow is said to be a “poor man's fertilizer” because it contains a lot of nitrogen.

Now that the snow is melting away, we can get on with preparing more areas for planting. We have planned and asked our farm members to increase the lettuce and salad green production this year so as we can include more in the shares for your enjoyment.

Ethan Brent is out of town this week, so the newsletter is a bit shorter.

In the coming weeks, we plan to revise the format of the Weekly Weeder to a column style newsletter for easier reading. We will also be adding some new subjects and pictures. We are bringing back some columns from our original format like Curiousity Corner that covers some of the unusual plants, insects, and animals around the farms.

Crop Report

As mentioned in the farm news, the spring snowstorm did not do much damage to the crops at most of the farms, but did affect a number of apple orchards in the Western part of Virginia. Hopefully this will be end to Old Man Winter's harsh grip. A few shoots of asparagus are starting to emerge and there should be a plentiful harvest of these spring-time treats once the rain arrives.

In Your Produce Basket This Week

Curly Kale, Tender Baby Collard Greens, Spring Braising Mix, Rosemary, Free-Range Eggs, Flowers.

Note about the forsythia in your flower share: strip off the bottom few twigs and flowers, plant in the ground and give it some water. Forsythia usually readily roots, especially in the springtim.
